In either a wood stove or fireplace, the easiest and best fire is built by using a mixture of both softwoods -- from trees such as pines and firs -- and hardwoods -- oak, eucalyptus, cedar and so on.

Softwoods start burning easily, and the hardwoods provide for long burning and good "coaling" qualities. A bed of ashes underneath the grate produces steady heat and aids in igniting new fuel as it is added. The fire will continue burning if small amounts of wood are added at regular intervals. In fact, more efficient combustion results from burning small loads of wood with sufficient air than from burning large loads with minimal air.

Bruce Hurst is the owner/operator of Hurst Firewood and Tree service. Bruce's parents, Joe and Laura Hurst settled in the Napa area in 1935 and started the company.

The company has been family owned & operated for three generations. Bruce worked for his father in the firewood and tree service business from his childhood until his father retired in 1977.

Hurst firewood carries the largest supply and selection of season firewood in Napa County and services most cities in Solano, Contra Costa and Sonoma Counties.

All woods are sold separately or as a mix. At present Hurst Firewood carries Oak, Almond, Madrone, Cherry, Walnut, Eucalyptus, Fir, and Pine. There most popular and recommended mix consists of 80% hardood (Walnut, Eucalyptus, Elm, or Maple) and 20% softwood (Fir or Pine). They recommend this mix as the firewood burns cleaner, hotter, and more efficiently which is also less polluting.

Hurst is also known for their highly recommended tree service. They offer reasonable and competitive rates for tree removal, brush clearing, land clearing, stump grinding, custom hauling and fire breaks.
